9Review your driving record and credit report

Your driving history and, in many states, a credit-based insurance score can influence your premium. Errors in either one could cost you money without you realizing it. Checking them before renewal gives you time to correct mistakes and to understand what insurers are likely to see when they quote you.

You can usually request a copy of your driving record from your state's motor vehicle agency, sometimes for a small fee. Look for tickets or accidents that are not yours or that should have aged off. You can also get free copies of your credit reports from the major credit bureaus, so review those for accounts or late payments you do not recognize.

If you find an error, follow the dispute process explained by the agency or bureau and keep copies of everything you send. Rules about using credit in insurance pricing vary by state, and some states limit or do not allow it. Your agent can explain how it applies where you live.
