3Report it if you're driving a lot less

Many policies are priced partly on how many miles you expect to drive. If you've started working from home, retired, moved closer to work or simply drive less than you did when you first bought the policy, your insurer may still be pricing you for your old commute.

Call and update your estimated yearly mileage, and ask whether a low-mileage discount applies. Some insurers also offer usage-based programs that track driving through a small device or a phone, and others charge partly by the mile. These can reward light or careful drivers, but they may not suit everyone, especially people who often drive late at night or brake hard in heavy traffic.

Before signing up for any tracking program, read how the data is used and whether your rate can go up based on what it records. Some programs only offer discounts, while others can raise your premium. Knowing the rules up front helps you decide if it's a good fit.
