5Don't let shipping, returns and fees eat your discounts

A low price online can lose its shine once shipping charges, rush delivery fees and taxes are added at checkout. During the busiest weeks, shipping costs can climb and delivery windows can stretch, which sometimes leads shoppers to pay extra just to get a gift on time.

Order early when you can, and look for free shipping thresholds that you'd reach anyway with items already on your list. Buying online and picking up in store is another option many retailers offer that may avoid delivery fees entirely. Avoid padding an order with things you don't need just to qualify for free shipping, though.

Return policies matter too. Some stores extend return windows for holiday purchases, while others charge restocking fees or offer only store credit. Read the terms before you buy, especially for pricey items and clothing that may not fit. Ask for gift receipts so recipients can exchange items easily, and keep your own receipts organized in case you need to make a return.
