4Start a folder for tax season now

Tax season is much less stressful when your documents are already in one place. Taking time now to set up a folder, either on paper or on your computer, can save you from a last-minute scramble later.

Gather records you'll likely need, such as receipts for deductible expenses, records of charitable donations, statements from side income, medical bills and any paperwork related to buying or selling a home or investments. As forms arrive in the coming weeks, add them to the folder right away so nothing gets lost.

If you're self-employed or have income that isn't subject to withholding, review whether you've set aside enough for taxes. If you've had a major life change this year, such as a marriage, a new baby, a move or a job change, consider meeting with a tax professional early. They can help you understand what to expect and whether any steps taken now make sense for your situation.
