7Decide now what counts as an emergency
An emergency fund only works if it's there when you truly need it. Without clear guidelines, it can slowly get spent on things that feel urgent in the moment, like a sale, a concert or a holiday trip.
Take time to define what qualifies before anything happens. Many people include job loss, medical bills, essential car repairs, urgent home repairs and unexpected travel for a family crisis. Predictable costs, such as annual fees or holiday gifts, are usually better handled with separate savings set aside for those purposes.
When something comes up, ask yourself a few simple questions. Is it necessary? Is it urgent? Was it unexpected? If the answer to all three is yes, using the fund is exactly what it's for, and there's no reason to feel guilty. If not, consider other ways to cover it or wait until you can pay for it from your regular budget. Sharing these guidelines with a partner can prevent misunderstandings later.
