3Review your car insurance discounts, then compare quotes

Car insurance premiums are based on many factors, and some of them may have changed without your insurer updating your policy. Maybe you now drive fewer miles because you work from home, you paid off your car, or an old ticket has aged off your record. Any of these can affect what you pay, but insurers do not always adjust automatically.

Call your agent or insurer and ask for a full discount review. Common discounts can include those for bundling policies, paying in full, going paperless, safe driving, good grades for student drivers, or completing a defensive driving course. Ask, too, whether raising your deductible would lower your premium, and make sure you could comfortably cover that deductible if you had a claim.

Your current insurer is only one data point. Rates for the same driver can vary a lot from one company to the next, so it often pays to get a few quotes for the same coverage limits before you decide. Keep your declarations page nearby so each quote matches what you have now.
