4Brushing off small purchases as no big deal

A coffee here, a delivery fee there, a quick add-on at checkout. Each one is easy to justify because it's small, and many people don't count them at all when they think about their spending. The danger is that they feel too minor to track.

Together, though, these purchases can make up a surprising share of a monthly budget. They're also the hardest to see because they're scattered across many days and many merchants. When money runs short before payday, it's often these little charges, not one big splurge, that are to blame.

You don't need to cut out every treat. Instead, track small purchases for a few weeks so you can see the real total, then decide which ones are worth it to you. Some people set a weekly allowance for these extras and stop once it's used up. Others remove saved card details from shopping apps so every purchase takes a moment of thought.
