8Letting every raise disappear into new spending
Getting a raise or a better-paying job should make life feel easier. Yet many people find that within a few months they're just as tight on money as before. A nicer car, a bigger apartment, more takeout and a few new subscriptions can quietly absorb the extra income.
This pattern is often called lifestyle creep, and it's one of the main reasons people with good incomes still live paycheck to paycheck. Each upgrade seems small and well earned, but together they raise your fixed costs, which are much harder to cut later.
Before a raise hits your account, decide what you'll do with it. One approach is to send a portion of each increase straight to savings or debt payments and let yourself enjoy the rest. That way you still feel the reward of earning more while building some breathing room. Be especially careful with upgrades that come with long contracts or new monthly payments.
