6Compare quotes before every renewal you're unsure about

Loyalty is not always rewarded in insurance. A policy that was a good deal when you bought it can drift upward over the years, while other insurers may be eager to win customers just like you. Checking the market from time to time is the simplest way to make sure your price is still competitive.

To compare fairly, give each company the same details and ask for the same dwelling limit, personal property coverage, liability limit, deductibles and endorsements you have now. Make sure everyone is using the same estimate of your home's size and features. A quote that looks cheaper because it quietly leaves something out is not really cheaper.

If you find a better offer, you have two good options. You can switch, making sure your new policy starts before the old one ends so there is no gap. Or you can share what you found with your current insurer and ask whether it can do better. Either way, you will be paying a price you chose, not one you inherited.
