10 Free Things Your Local Library Offers
A library card is free in most communities, yet plenty of people haven't used theirs in years. Today's libraries offer far more than shelves of books, and some of it can replace things you're currently paying for.
1Ebooks and audiobooks you can borrow from your phone
Most public libraries now lend digital books and audiobooks that you can read or listen to on a phone, tablet or e-reader. You borrow them with your library card, and they return themselves automatically when the loan period ends, so there are no late fees to worry about.
Popular titles may have a waiting list, just like printed books. Placing holds on several titles at once usually means something is ready for you most of the time. Many systems also offer magazines and comics in digital form, often with no waiting at all.
If you regularly pay for audiobooks or buy ebooks, try borrowing your next few instead and see whether the selection meets your needs. Ask at the front desk if you need help setting up a reading app, since staff are often happy to walk you through it. Some libraries also let residents of nearby areas sign up, so check the rules if you've recently moved.
