4Tools, gadgets and other everyday items

A growing number of libraries lend items you might use only once or twice a year. Depending on the branch, that could include power tools, sewing machines, cake pans, camping gear, telescopes, musical instruments, kitchen appliances or even fishing rods. These collections are often called a library of things.

Borrowing makes sense for projects where buying would mean spending money on something that sits in the garage afterward. It also lets you try out an item before deciding whether it's worth owning. You might discover that a new hobby isn't for you, or confirm that it is before buying your own gear.

Loan periods tend to be shorter than for books, and some items require an adult cardholder or a signed agreement. Inspect the item when you pick it up, ask staff to note any existing damage, and return it clean and on time so others in your community can use it too.
