5Get quotes from a few other insurers
Even if you are happy with your insurer, renewal is a natural time to check whether your price is still competitive. Insurers use their own formulas to set rates, and they weigh factors like age, location, vehicle and driving history differently. The result is that the same driver can receive noticeably different prices from different companies.
Use your declarations page so each quote matches your current liability limits, deductibles and optional coverages. That way you are comparing prices for the same protection rather than a stripped-down policy. Note what each company includes, such as accident forgiveness or rental coverage, and how its customer service and claims handling are rated.
Try to gather quotes a couple of weeks before renewal. If you find a better offer, you can ask your current insurer whether they can match it or simply switch. If you do switch, make sure the new policy is active before you cancel the old one so you never have a gap in coverage.
