8 Signs You're Paying Too Much for Home Insurance

1 / 8

Home insurance is easy to set up once and never think about again. But premiums can drift upward year after year, and the price you are paying may not reflect your home or your situation today. If a few of these signs sound familiar, your policy deserves a closer look.

1Your premium rises every year and nobody has told you why

A renewal that costs a little more than last year is easy to shrug off. A few years of that in a row is harder to ignore, especially if you never filed a claim and nothing about your home changed. Some increases reflect real shifts, such as higher building costs or more severe weather in your region, but you deserve to know which factors apply to you.

Before your next renewal, call your insurer or agent and ask for a plain explanation. Did the company raise rates for everyone in your area? Did your home's estimated rebuilding cost go up? Did something on your record or in your coverage change? Write down the answers so you can compare them with what you hear next year.

If the explanation is vague, or the increase seems out of proportion to the reasons given, treat that as a signal rather than a fact of life. Insurers do not all price the same risks the same way, and the reasons behind your increase may not apply with another company. Knowing why your price moved is the first step toward deciding whether to stay put.
