2You haven't shopped around since you bought the house

For many homeowners, the insurance decision happens in a rush during closing. A lender needs proof of coverage, the agent who was easiest to reach writes a policy, and that policy renews automatically from then on. It works, so there is no obvious reason to revisit it. That is exactly how people end up paying more than they need to.

Since that first policy, a lot may have changed. Your home has a longer track record, you may have updated parts of it, and the companies writing policies in your area may have adjusted how they price homes like yours. The insurer that was competitive when you moved in is not guaranteed to be competitive now.

Comparing quotes does not commit you to switching. Ask each company to match the coverage you have today, including dwelling limits, deductibles and any extras, so you are comparing like with like. If you find a better price, you can take it, or you can ask your current insurer whether it is willing to do better. Either way, you will know where you stand.
