8Research databases you'd otherwise pay for
Behind the scenes, libraries subscribe to databases that are often expensive for individuals. These may include newspaper and magazine archives, academic journals, legal forms, car repair manuals and family history records. Many cardholders never realize they have access to any of them.
Two that can be especially useful in everyday life are consumer product reviews and genealogy resources. Before buying a major appliance or car, you may be able to read in-depth product testing through your library rather than paying for a separate subscription. Family history databases, meanwhile, can help you trace relatives through old records, immigration documents and newspapers.
Some databases work from home with your card, while others can only be used inside the library building. Check your library's website for the full list, and don't hesitate to ask a reference librarian for help. They're trained to find reliable information quickly and can save you hours of searching on your own.
