9Makerspaces with printers, recording gear and more

Some libraries have makerspaces or creative labs with equipment most people don't have at home. Depending on the branch, you might find three-dimensional printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, sewing and embroidery machines, recording booths, photo scanners and video editing computers.

These spaces can be useful for hobby projects, school assignments, side businesses or simply digitizing old family photos and home videos before they fade. Often there's a short training session before you can use certain machines, and you may need to book time in advance. Materials such as printing filament may carry a small charge at some branches, so ask first.

Even if your local branch doesn't have a makerspace, another branch in the same system might. Staff can usually tell you what's available and help you get started. It's a low-risk way to try a new skill without investing in expensive equipment you may not use again. Many makerspaces also host beginner workshops where you can learn alongside others.
